Epiphone G400 SG Electric Guitar Cherry finish

The Gibson SG standard has been an iconic guitar for decades now with famous players such as Angus Young and that bloke from the Stereophonics swearing by them. Epiphone are the baby brother company of Gibson and this, the G400, is the official SG standard replica.

The Epiphone SG 400 utilises Mahogany as the main wood of the instrument and both the neck and body are crafted from Mahogany. The fret-board is in Rosewood and is decorated with attractive pearl trapezoidal inlays, like most of the Epiphone range this guitar has been manufactured in China.

The pick-ups are twin Alnico hum-buckers with passive electronics and these are controlled by their own tone and volume pots. The SG 400 has a tune-o-matic bridge and Grover non-locking machine heads whilst the bridge and tailpiece are chrome plated and the body is available in Cherry finish. This guitar is also available as a left handed version.

At this kind of price, what's the point of going for a cheap copy when you can have the G400...it's as close to the real thing as your gonna get and even says Gibson on the headstock, albeit in teeny weeny writing!

The SG 400 differs from the SG 310 in the choice of wood and pick-ups, the 310 has an alder body and open-coil hum-buckers whereas the 400 has a one piece mahogany body and uses Alnico hum-bucking pick-ups.

The SG is a simple yet effective guitar, it perhaps doesn’t have some of the bells and whistles associated with other brands and yet there must be a good reason why it’s still selling strong after more than 30 years.

The craftsmanship and design that originally created the SG was obviously top notch and still holds true today, it reminds me of the American phrase “If it ain’t broken …. don’t try and fix it …” And that’s essentially why we don’t see versions of the SG with locking trems and active electronics on-board, because if you do that then you’re missing the point of this guitar.

The Epiphone SG 400 is a lovely guitar, despite being made in China the build quality is good, the pick-ups are warm and mellow on a clean sound yet gutsy and raunchy when the amp gets turned up to number 11.

So to summarise all I can say is that if you’ve ever had a hankering to own an SG but can’t quite stretch to the budget of a Gibson original, then the G 400 is definitely worth checking out...full range in stock at the Nevada Music Warehouse.
