Description

Ibanez RG2550Z Galaxy Black Electric Guitar with Case

The Ibanez RG range have been gracing the windows and shelves of music stores for over 20 years now, there are now over 25 different models that come under the RG banner and they are still as popular now as they have always been.

The RG2550Z is part of the Ibanez Prestige range and is manufactured using a basswood body with a 3 piece maple & walnut neck and a flat Rosewood fret board that utilises 24 jumbo frets and has Shark-fin fret markers. Basswood has now become a common material for use in guitar manufacturing and is a relatively lightweight wood which makes it suitable for extended playing periods. Sound-wise its qualities lie somewhere in between Alder and Mahogany providing comparatively good low and high end resonance.

The pick-up configuration provides USA made Dimarzio IBZ hum-buckers at the neck and bridge position with a single coil IBZ pick-up located in between the two in a middle position. A single volume and separate tone control speed knob provides volume and tone adjustment where appropriate.

The RG2550Z uses the Ibanez Edge Pro locking tremolo system which is in a matt charcoal finish to match the Galaxy black finish of the guitar. All other hardware is finished in chrome (machine heads and volume & tone pots) and the review model had a stunning mirror scratch plate – not sure if this comes as standard or is an optional add-on.

This is a beautifully crafted guitar and the pick-up configuration of two hum-buckers and a single coil give massive scope for this instrument to suit a wide range of musical styles. The clean sounds are bright, rich and full whilst the hum-buckers sound raunchy and hot once you dial-up your distortion settings.

Personally I don’t use the tremolo arm much when playing, and even then only in subtle instances – however I thought I’d put the Pro Edge system through its paces. Despite several “whammy bar” dive-bombs the tuning held firm, although I’m a determined believer that tuning stability with locking tremolos comes from the careful setting up of the system.

I’m afraid we’re back to the old adage again, which is … you get what you pay for …. This is not a cheap guitar by any means and will set you back well over £500, however for that amount of money you will get a quality guitar with great versatility and stunning looks ….
