Having filled a gap in the market with the introduction the Thinline Series in 1955, Gibson was then faced with the challenge of creating a model with thinline looks and solidbody sustain. This challenge was met in 1958 with the introduction of the ES-335, an innovative new semi-hollowbody guitar. With its solid maple center block, arched top, f-holes, and chambered wings, the ES-335 provided the resonance of a solidbody, the looks of a traditional hollowbody, and the reduced weight of a thinline.
