Description

The Fender CD 100 is an entry level Dreadnought style acoustic guitar and this particular one is the left handed model. This model stems from Fender’s Classic Design series originating at the beginning of 2006 and uses a Laminated Spruce top with Laminated Mahogany rear and sides, the neck is crafted from Nato wood.

The neck has a Rosewood fret board with 20 frets and inlaid dot position markers whilst the machine heads are die-cast chrome tuners. The bridge is also manufactured from Rosewood and has a compensated saddle, the strings are held in place via the traditional bridge pin method.

The body of this acoustic guitar is bound by a black and white multiple pin-stripe design and the sound hole has an ornate circular rosette running around the circumference. The cosmetic appearance is completed by the black scratch plate situated adjacent to the sound hole …

As an entry level instrument, the question I always ask myself at the start of a review is how easy/difficult is this guitar to play – even before I find out how the instrument sounds. This is because if the instrument – in this case an acoustic guitar – is difficult to play then no matter how good it sounds it’s never going to be a popular choice with the buying public …

So, you’ll be happy to know that the CD 100 left hand model is very easy to play (although as I’m right handed I had to get a “Lefty” colleague of mine to verify this) and sounds pretty good too for an entry level guitar thanks to the careful choice of Spruce and Mahogany raw materials. Ok I’ll admit it doesn’t have the rich resonance of a Guild or Taylor model but then it only costs 10% of what you’d expect to pay for these high end models.

But the sound is bright, with a "zingy" metallic snap to it and chords sustain remarkably well for an entry level model. This instrument is well made and has the credibility of the Fender brand name behind it, I have therefore no objection whatsoever in recommending this to beginners, novices or existing guitarists looking for a budget acoustic as a writing tool – it’s great value for money …
