Description

The Baby Taylor is an accurately scaled ¾ size acoustic guitar and is therefore aimed at children or as a smaller bodied travel guitar for adults. However it has been made to the usual Taylor high specifications and uses luxurious tone woods such as Mahogany, Sitka Spruce and Ebony. It has also become popular as a guitar used for a specific purpose, as the smaller scale suits highly strung tunings and slide techniques as used on Dobros.

The top of this ¾ size Dreadnought model is beautifully crafted from Sitka Spruce whilst the rear and sides use Sapele Wood Laminate. The guitar neck also uses American Tropical Mahogany with a beautiful Ebony fret board and 20 medium frets.

The fret position markers are inlaid Pearloid dots whilst the headstock overlay is Lexan, the bridge is also manufactured from Ebony and has a Tusq compensated bridge saddle. The guitar strings are held in place at the bridge via the traditional grooved bridge pin method, and at the opposite end of the instrument, the machine heads are the enclosed die-cast type finished in chrome.

The cosmetic appearance of this guitar is completed by a tortoise shell scratch plate and a delicate, laser etched, decorative rosette encircling the sound hole for that final touch of class …

This is a Taylor guitar ….. so immediately that spells high quality to me, the use of Sitka Spruce, Mahogany and Ebony also means that this guitar is very luxurious, and therefore not an obvious entry-level model. However, the fact that this model (The 307L Big Baby Left Hand) has been made to a perfect ¾ size scale suggests that it may be aimed at the younger end of the market. Either way you’d have to have pretty affluent parents or be damned serious about playing the acoustic guitar to want one of these as a twelve year old …

As a right handed guitarist, I had to call upon the services of a left handed and much trusted colleague of mine to give me his judgement on this instrument. But seeing as I had to prize this guitar from his hands after two hours using an electric cattle prod, I think it’s safe to assume that he liked it … The good thing about having someone else demonstrate the instrument is that it leaves you  free to simply listen to the tone of the guitar, and I have to say that the 307L’s tone was lush and full with a shimmering top end – probably courtesy of the bright and resonant sounding Sapele wood.

It’s very difficult to criticise a guitar like this, as arguably Taylor have the best made guitars in the world when you consider the high quality materials used and the detail and care that goes into their construction. If I was to be very pedantic then the only slight argument I could put forward is the price, is this guitar worth the best part of £400 ? Well, in my humble opinion, yes it is …but I think you’d almost need to be a connoisseur to appreciate that …
