Takamine G220 NEX Acoustic Guitar Natural

My first acoustic cost £4.12s.6d!! It was a budget instrument with a neck the size of a Redwood with the bark left on and an action that really did make my fingers bleed! That could have ended my guitar playing ambitions for good and I’m sure instruments like that put paid to many a budding career. Taking inflation into account this Takamine G220 is the modern equivalent of my first guitar but oh how things have changed....

Spruce is the wood of choice for the soundboard and it’s tastefully decorated with concentric rings and a black single ply scratch plate. The back and sides are Mahogany. No timber is specified for the neck but I suspect its Nato topped off with a Rosewood Fret board carrying white dot position markers.

The unmistakeable Takamine headstock is home to six decent quality enclosed chrome tuners that feel positive in use. To finish off we have a Rosewood bridge with black pins.

The Takamine G Series guitars are manufactured in Asia. This enables Takamine to keep costs down. However it's evident having played the guitar that Takamine’s strict quality control is adhered to. The only comparison with this guitar (possibly you’re first acoustic) and my first acoustic is that from a long way off the shape is vaguely similar....

The guitar is light weight and has a neck my generation would have killed for, slim with a good action. Overall the set up makes for a pleasant playing experience straight from the box. No, it doesn’t sound like one of Takamines upmarket all solid tone wood affairs but it is a great sound for what is after all a start up instrument.

All the ingredients are here to encourage you to play, not discourage as was the case with instruments of yore. As well as putting in a creditable performance you also get a handsome looking instrument which is instantly recognisable as a Takamine, one of the best acoustic guitar manufacturers on the planet.
