Reinhold Bogner is a German native who moved to Los Angeles and used his electrical engineering skills to become the LA Guru who customises amplifiers for the LA rock elite and session musicians. Bogner has performed customisations for Steve Stevens, Dan Huff, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Landau and Steve Vai all of who sought out his skill at modifying and custom building their amps.

In collaboration with Line 6 Bogner has chiefly been responsible for developing the Spider Valve series of amplifiers which combines amp modelling with some great high quality effects. Bognor is not just a gizmo geek, he has a tremendous working knowledge of vintage and modern amp designs, he's an inventor, a craftsman, a brilliant and respected engineer, and best of all he has a reputation for having a great set of ears.

The great thing about this particular line of modelling amps is that Valve technology as well as morphing software is used in the modelling process to bring an element of realism to the modelling architecture - the Line 6 modelling software feeds a pair of 12AX7 preamp tubes.

The first tube is set up as a cascading gain stage, with each stage contributing to the harmonic complexity that vintage amp players love.  This subsequently feeds the master volume which hits the next 12AX7 valve configured as a phase splitter which is followed by Sovtek 5881WXT/6L6 valve. There’s 2 x 6L6’s as output valves for 40 watts of class AB power in the combos,  and 4 x 6L6’s for 100 watts of class AB power in the amp head.

There are 16 basic amp models featuring some of the world’s finest classic amplifier configurations, to further enhance the tonal options there’s an additional 7 high quality effects and a degree of tonal amendment options that include Presence, Drive, Bass, Middle and Treble.

The Amp models range from the classic Hi-Watt amps of the 1960’s used by The Who, through to the legendary Fender Twin Reverbs of the 1970’s and stopping off at all stations en route to Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Vox and Soldano – each with a variable option. All of the 300+ pre-sets have been created by the cream of LA's session musicians including Tim Pierce, Matt Scanell and Michael Ripoli ...

The 20 SMART effects include Tape Echo, Sweep Echo, Standard Delay (all with Tap Tempo) Chorus/Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, and Reverb and three effects can be used simultaneously. There are also 36 user programmable channels, a front panel guitar tuner and the combo uses two 12” Premium Celestion Vintage 30 speaker, not to mention an XLR direct line out for studio recording.

This is an astonishing piece of equipment, it’s a long time since I’ve been so impressed with an amplifier but I have to say this amp is the business. I tried the 212 with a Strat and a Les Paul and there were specific pre-sets that matched each instrument beautifully. The pre-set that was particularly good with the Strat was called “Albert Lee” and it really was a shimmering, twangy, single coil hum-dinger with plenty of bright resonance and clarity.

There were many others that complimented the Les Paul, from subtle blues crunch to out and out blistering powerhouse overdrive sounds. These were then ably assisted by some very high quality effects that to my ears came close to studio quality.

This is a great amp for recording – particularly with the direct out for plugging into a desk although if I were to use it live I’d probably invest in the foot pedal for ease of changing sounds. The guru behind the Spider Valve design is LA amp guru Reinhold Bognor, an electronics genius and native of Germany who made his reputation in LA by customising amplifiers for the Rock elite that includes EVH, Steve Vai, Michael Landau and many others …

If you’ve yet to discover the Spider Valve amp, treat yourself and try this range out at the Nevada Music Warehouse – it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on …
