Once the files are on the HD MIX you can browse them by title, artist, album, year, genre etc or simply search for them by using the included USB keyboard, so if someone requests and Elvis track, simply type "Elvis" into the search and take your pick from the results. You can store track playlists and also use the "Crate" facility to have tracks to hand for on the fly decisions.
The HD MIX looks and feels just like working with a regular twin CD and mixer setup except you search for tracks on the screen rather than putting CD's in all the time. The mixer has trim, bass, middle and treble controls for each channel, a cross-fader than can be defeated if you prefer not to use one, a third channel for external inputs or a mic and the usual cue headphone facility. The pitch faders and search wheel offer the usual tempo controls and if you select the pitch lock facility, you can change the tracks tempo without changing the pitch which is fantastic for beat matching and tweaking the speed of a track without the Mickey Mouse / Barry White result.

A proprietary system runs the software within the console and so therefore doesn't impact on your laptop, the system menu is accessed from a large LCD screen located in the middle of the console.
