Shure E4 Personal Headphones

So, here are the latest version of Shure’s In-ear Sound Isolating headphones, namely the E4c’s that have been called “…The BMW of In-ear headphones …” by the American “lads mag” Esquire. Ok, so let’s take a look at them and see what all the fuss is about …

The main difference in the technology of how these headphones work is to do with the upgraded micro-drivers; these are the little pods on the ends of the wires that you stuff into your ear canal. The frequency range and stereo imagery on the drivers has been improved so that you receive wider stereo imagery and a greater range of frequency response which according to other reviews from technology magazines gives a more natural sound.

Shure have developed a “tuned port” driver which apparently improves the air-flow around the in-ear speaker and is tuned in to receive enhanced bass frequencies – which are the ones that are the hardest to re-create within the inner ear. All the rest of the accessories are included such as the Personal Fit Kit complete with various foam and flex sleeves along with some new triple flanged sleeves all of which come in different sizes for different shaped ears.

The E4c’s are ever so slightly heavier at 1.1oz and as usual come with the 2 year limited warranty and are available in black or white.

The E4c’s have now won numerous awards from various magazines in both the technology and audio industries and have been championed by Maxim, Esquire and Business Week magazine – so who am I to argue … ?

Yes, they sound pretty fantastic, but at a cost of around £200 for a set of In-ear headphones wouldn’t you expect them to sound flippin’ fantastic ….?! Yet again we return to our old friend, personal taste. Yuppies and high flying business men who can afford to pay that sort of money for some In-ear headphones will undoubtedly stump up without question, if their requirement for high quality music reproduction is sufficiently high on their list of priorities.

I guess what I’m saying here is that were almost getting into the realms of geeky individuals who are into out-doing each other with the next greatest boys toy, much the same way that they try to out-do each other with the latest high tech phone or laptop. Yes the Shure E4c’s sound spectacular, but you’ll need to have a lot of disposable income to prioritise the purchase of these over everything else.
