The DJ turntable is more often called a "deck" and its purpose is to play the vinyl disc. There are two types of deck; the belt drive which is more of an entry level product or the direct drive which is far more versatile.
The belt drive deck will have a slower startup time and is not really suitable for the stability required for beat mixing. The direct drive turntable has an almost instantaneous startup time and has excellent speed stability and is the chosen style of deck for the DJ.
Once you have your Deck you will need a stylus or needle to pickup the sound from the vinyl disc. There is a wide range available from companies like Stanton or Ortofon, both of which offer a good range to suit your budget.
