Although made from brass the saxophone is in fact classed as a woodwind instrument and was originally invented to supply bass parts for woodwind and brass sections. This instrument became enormously popular in the 1930s and 40s as Jazz and the sound of the big band became a trendy genre of music for the masses.
During the 1950s it was integrated into Rhythm and Blues music and this in turn eventually led to the evolution of soul music, whilst blues also progressed towards the birth of rock and roll. One of the reasons why the saxophone has stood the test of time is because its sound has adapted well to different musical categories.
In modern times saxophones are used extensively across a wide range of music from military marching bands to jazz ensembles. Probably the most famous saxophonist whose musical style has evolved and changed throughout his career is none other than David Bowie, for although he is universally known as a recording artist and live performer his career began as a saxophonist.
