The history of instruments with strings can be traced back through history as far the early Egyptian times. A string instrument is one which produces sound from vibrating the strings; sound from the strings is transferred to the body of the instrument or to a pickup which can be connected to an amplifier to amplify the sound.
String instruments cover a wide range, varying from the classical violins and cellos to acoustic and electric guitars and even an acoustic piano is classified as a string instrument. To play an instrument with strings involves techniques such as picking, plucking or using a bow. Some instruments such as acoustic pianos rely on striking the strings to produce a sound.
