Description

Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass Natural

Well, here’s a blast from the past – I haven’t seen this type of 1970’s style bass for many years and back in the 70’s they were usually accompanied by a pair of wicked side burns, a pair of ludicrously wide Birmingham bags (trousers to those who weren’t around back then) and completed by some 4 inch platform shoes that caused the owner to totter around like Frankenstein.

This instrument harks back to the birth of Funk and the soft Maple natural wood finish is particularly attractive despite the over-sized large body of the bass and Herculean neck. The 20 fret bolt-on neck has a maple fret board and at the end sports 70’s style standard open gear tuners with Shamrock shaped keys.

The single coil pick ups located in the middle of the body and down by the bridge have been designed by Seymour Duncan and are JB101’s with Alnico 5 magnets. These are managed by two volume controls (one for each pick-up) and a single master tone control, adjacent to the control knobs is the front mounted jack insert and all three sit on a chrome base plate.

The 4 saddle bridge and machine heads are also chrome plated whilst the scratch plate and rectangular fret markers on the Maple neck are in black plastic.

However, that said it certainly does give out quite a kick-ass sound with particular emphasis on the low mid-range spectrum. It’s also one of those bass guitars whose sound changes quite dramatically depending on if you’re using finger style or plectrum and the latter brings about a real top end “twang” to the proceedings.

This bass model has been praised by many of today’s leading bassists and has therefore become resurgent in its quest to re-establish itself within a highly competitive market. Personally I think this bass sounds great but unless you’re of a suitable build you may find it sheer size and stature difficult to cope with …
