Description

Sennheiser Freeport Instrument/Beltpack UHF Radio System

It's not hard to find cheap wireless systems nowadays, but not many of the budget systems out there boast the same sound and build quality, not to mention the prestigious brand name that the Sennheiser Freeport Wireless Radio Systems offer.  The Freeport is available in 3 versions: Handheld Vocal, Beltpack Instrument or Lavalier Clip Microphone.

This is the Instrument/Beltpack system.  Primarily, it is designed as a guitar wireless system (although it will work with other instruments with a jack output) and features an instrument lead which connects to a 9v battery powered beltpack.  Also included is a Sennheiser EM1 reciever unit and power supply.

This full-diversity UHF system offers 4 switchable frequencies within the range 863-865MHz (licence-free in the UK), allowing you to quickly and easily change frequencies when using multiple system setups, or to avoid interference from another nearby system.  The EM1 receiver unit is well constructed in a small metal case, about half-rack size. It features two swivel antennae, and LED indicators for power, channel activity, audio peaking and RF (radio frequency) level. The rear panel houses balanced XLR and unbalanced jack outputs as well as gain and squelch controls and the DC power connector. Unusual on a system in this price range is it's full-diversity design. This means that it incorporates two independent receiver paths, one connected to each antenna.  The receiver will automatically switch to the one providing the strongest signal, thereby reducing the risk of system drop-outs and loss of signal continuity.

On a whole, the Sennheiser Freeport is a very well constructed system which delivers sound quality that out performs it's budget price tag by far.  For this kind of money, you won't find a better radio system.

I am always very sceptical of wireless guitar systems, unless you spend A LOT of money, you always end up losing tone and signal quality...the Sennheiser Freeport Instrument system is no different, but it is by no way bad, considering how much it costs.  As with most radio systems I experienced a little signal loss, compression of the signal and slight latency whilst putting through it's paces...but to be honest, it wasn't as bad as some systems I've tried costing twice as much as this!  Thanks to the true diversity reciever, I experienced no drop out and a very low level of background noise.  When I kick in the high gain overdrive I could hardly tell the difference between the radio signal and the direct lead signal I was switching between as comparison.  So in conclusion, if you're a tone purist, I'd probably stick to a decent quality lead...but if you mainly use a rocky/punky distortion sound and want the freedom to throw yourself around the stage, you can't get better value than the Sennheiser Freeport Instrument system.
