EKO BA4L Black Florence Acoustic Bass Guitar

The Eko BA4L is an acoustic bass guitar of hollow bodied construction. It has a black polyurethane gloss finish and a Rosewood fret board with dot inlay fret markers. The outer edges of the body have ivory coloured strip edgings with a lower cutaway that gives good access to all 22 frets. The headstock is also finished in black and has positive machine heads in a two above/two below configuration.

The Eko BA4L bass has string retaining pegs of the "hammer home" variety which are mounted on a Rosewood bridge piece along with the plastic saddle. A nine volt battery is housed in a pop-up retainer on top of body, along with the controls for the electrics which comprise of two rotary knobs for volume and presence along with four sliders for treble, low-mid, high-mid and bass. There is an internally housed transducer pick-up, not visible from the outside, that is mounted under the bridge.

The BA4L gives the flexibility of playing either acoustically or through an amplifier. It produces a crisp tone acoustically and yet offers a wide variation of sounds when making use of the electrics. Being hollow-bodied, the guitar is quite light, making it surprisingly comfortable to play.

The Eko BA4L has quite a severe lower cutaway giving it an unusual but still very pleasant Dreadnought shape. The acoustic guitar feel of the instrument is completed by the oval sound hole which is aptly decorated with a symbol somewhat reminiscent of a quaver. The neck is of a standard width but is quite thick depth-wise, presumably to accommodate for the strains of four heavy strings and the absence of a truss rod.

Acoustically the guitar has a lovely top end although the bass frequencies are surprisingly loud too, and it would hold its own in any small acoustic group without any need for an amplifier. The tone is more adaptable, however, when amplified as it is easy to boost the bass end for a more bluesy feel, and indeed offers more than enough variation to satisfy most musical styles.

There was something about playing this guitar that made me think of chequered shirts and dungarees, in fact it was all I could do to stop myself from playing “Duelling banjos” on it! But whether you need to use it acoustically for home practice and un-amplified rehearsals, or amplified whenever more volume is required, you have the best of both worlds as it provides a wealth of different sounds from which to choose.

Many is the time I have needed just a little bit more volume when practicing bass, without wanting to go to the effort of setting up leads and amplifiers … if only I’d had the sense to nip down to the Nevada Music Warehouse and to have bought myself an Eko BA4L
