Some musicians - guitar players in particular - argue that the sound associated with valve amplifiers is much warmer and softer than a comparative sound from a transistor based guitar amplifier.
The only issue is the life span of the valves, which suffer due to the rigours of life on tour where equipment is constantly in and out of trucks and exposed to extreme environments. This eventually leads to the point where the valves will need to be replaced.
Today an entire industry has developed around replacement valves for current and vintage amplifiers. Some manufacturers have even started to produce valves that had previously become obsolete, just to meet the demand and because some guitarists believe that specific valve models offer the best distortion sound.
